The metaphor "change-talk" was created in a conversation between Muriel McClellan and Wendy Ellis in 1996. They were attempting to find a shortcut approach to a description of their work as consultants, therapists and teachers. In the process of their discussions they focused on that which is effective and successful in the creative process of embracing challenges.
Change was selected by them to represent the generation of new meanings and possibilities that result from conversations. This also highlights an appreciation of differences as enhancing.
Talk was selected by them to represent the importance of conversations and dialogue. These are the creative conversations in which new meanings are seeded and take form.
By wedding the two words change and talk together, a new word changetalk was thus invented!!! The process of creating changes and possibilities through conversations becomes the meaning of their metaphor.
CHANGE - the creation of new meanings
TALK - conversations and dialogue
CHANGE-Talk - the creation of new meanings through conversations with others
